Why Is Sustainable Yarn Sourcing Critical?
Sustainability is no longer a "choice" in the textile industry — it is a requirement. The EU Green Deal, EU Textile Strategy, and ESG commitments of major brands require every link in the supply chain to provide documented evidence of sustainability. Yarn is one of the most critical links in this chain.
GOTS Certification: Organic Yarn Standard
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): The most comprehensive global standard for organic fibers. Covers chemical use, waste management and social criteria. A GOTS-certified product requires the entire supply chain to be certified. Not just the fiber but the spinning mill must also be GOTS approved.
GRS Certification: Recycled Yarn
GRS (Global Recycled Standard): Verifies use of recycled content. Mandatory for products with 20% or more recycled content. Applies to cotton, polyester, nylon and similar materials. Covers post-consumer and post-industrial waste. GRS certification also requires a Chain of Custody (CoC) document throughout the supply chain.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and MADE IN GREEN
OEKO-TEX Standard 100: Proves absence of harmful substances. Separate class criteria for each age group (including infants). Tests 100+ harmful substances (formaldehyde, heavy metals, pesticides). Preferred for all textiles in contact with the human body. OEKO-TEX MADE IN GREEN: Documents both substance safety and production conditions.
Carbon Footprint and Scope 3 Reporting
For Scope 3 emissions reporting, you can request from your supplier: Fiber origin certificate. Energy consumption and source data (kWh/ton yarn). Water consumption (liters/ton yarn). Wastewater treatment certificate. Chemical list (ZDHC MRSL compliance). With this data you can calculate your own carbon footprint.
Which Certification for Which Market?
Which certification to prioritize depends on market segment and target brands: Premium European brands: GOTS or OEKO-TEX mandatory. Fast fashion and mid-market: GRS + OEKO-TEX combination. Sportswear and activewear: GRS (recycled polyester), Bluesign®. Baby and childrenswear: GOTS or OEKO-TEX Class 1. Hospital and medical textiles: Additional EN 14683 or ISO 22611 requirements.
